Today, on 19 September, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis met with members of the academic community of Yale University: President Peter Salovey, Professor Timothy Snyder,  and students of political science.

During a meeting with the President of Yale University Salovey, Landsbergis discussed not only the consequences of the war in Ukraine for the whole world, but also the need to change the belief in Russia’s alleged power in American and European universities.

“The West, as a collective power, must do everything possible to preserve the rules-based global order and make the Eastern Europe’s experience of living in the aggressor’s neighbourhood part of the U.S. and European academic programs,” Landsbergis said.

At the meeting with Yale University students of political science, the Foreign Minister answered students’ questions about NATO, the EU's policies and factors that could determine Ukraine’s victory and the future of autocratic regimes.

“The Western world's dependence on autocratic, undemocratic countries and their supply chains makes it vulnerable. However, each country is free to choose between cheaper dependence traps or more expensive but more sustainable resilience,” Landsbergis told PhD students at Yale University.

During the meeting with Professor Snyder, the Foreign  Minister discussed the need to continue mobilising Western support for Ukraine, as well as the need to alter the prevailing academic narratives about Russia, Ukraine, collective historical memory and lessons from the 20th century, as described by the Professor in his bestseller “On Tyranny”.

Peter Salovey, President of Yale University, who has Lithuanian roots and is proud of them, is an honorary doctor of VDU and will visit Lithuania next week.

Yale University is one of the two U.S. universities that offer their students a special Baltic Studies program.
